Remembering Hank Steinbrenner

Co-owner of the New York Yankees, Hank Steinbrenner, has died at the age of 63. Before getting any further into this article I think I speak for all of us when I say our thoughts and prayers are with the Steinbrenner family during this time. It was stated that Hank passed away in his Clearwater, Florida home from a pre-existing health issue. Hank was the Yankees "Public Voice" owner during the 2007 and 2008 seasons. After those seasons Hal took over that position. Hank was still very much so involved up until recently where he seemed to step back from the Yankees. Owning a team such as the Yankees is a tall task. There are hundreds of decisions to be made every day and seeing the microscope the Yankees play under most of those decisions are big ones. Even running the team for a year or two deserves loads of respect. Hank was famously quoted saying, "Red Sox Nation?” What a bunch of bulls–t that is,” ... “That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans. Go anywhere in America and you won’t see Red Sox hats and jackets, you’ll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We’re going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order.” Now that is an electric quote and something you probably would not hear out of most owners. He is probably most noted for his signing of Alex Rodriguez in 2007 to a 10 year, 275 million dollar deal. Though many say this deal was not a good one I would disagree. Any person who was signed and ended up on that 2009 team played a huge part in winning it all, especially Arod. He had clutch hit after clutch hit for the Yanks throughout that whole postseason. The other main thing is that in all likelihood Arod would have signed with the Red Sox that offseason, which would have caused even more problems over the years. The deal was a power move that set the tone for the next few offseasons where the Yankees went on to build their 2009 championship roster. Rest In Peace, Hank Steinbrenner. - The Commish
